Elizabethan Underpinnings D

Description

Finally something to show for the upcoming season!

This is the second of a set of underpinnings for a pair of sisters in the court at the Bristol Renaissance Faire.

The corset is made from a double layer of white herringbone coutil with, untabbed and bound in olive green bias tape. It is made from 1/2" spring steel, with two pieces of boning in the center two channels to mimic a busk. It is a two piece pattern with an open side seam for adjustability. The straps also tie in for ease of adjustment. The corset is machine sewn with channels and machine heart embroidery in blue thread.

The farthingale is made from heavy olive green cotton twill with plastic covered wire and a knife pleated ruffle at the bottom. The boning channels are hand made bias tape from the same olive twill. It is a time consuming process, but well worth it! The bottom circumfrence is approximately 110". I did not make the bumroll in the picture, it is being reused from a previous costume.

The joke being the underpinnings are "color coded" so their mother knows whose items are whose if she happens to find them on the floor. :)

Is the plastic covered wire what you used for the "hoops" of the farthingale. I'm making my own from the pattern in The Tudor Tailor, and I'm not sure what I should use. The book says to use cane, but I'm not sure what type, size, or even where I would buy them. I'm also concerned with how flexible the hoops would be. Ultimately I'd like to be able to ride my horse sidesaddle one day, so I need something that is flexible but will still hold its shape. What would you recommend?
